Here's what you need to know to grow.

Know Your Zone

The Peruvian Apple Cactus is best suited for outdoor gardening in USDA planting zones 9-11. This is because they prefer warmer temperatures and are not frost tolerant. If you live in a cooler climate, you can still enjoy Peruvian Apple Cactus as a potted plant that can be moved indoors during the colder months. Typically it's best to move them inside when temperatures begin to dip below 50°F, although they can tolerate temperatures as low as 32°F before sustaining significant damage.

Choose a Great Spot

The Peruvian Apple Cactus can be grown in a variety of soil types but prefers well-draining soil, such as our Potting Mix for Arid Plants. When planting, make sure the soil is dry and the roots are not sitting in water. Choose a sunny location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. This is the key to a happy cactus!

Water Carefully

This plant is drought-tolerant and should be watered sparingly. In general, it's best to water only when the soil is completely dry. During the winter months, you can reduce watering even further. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other issues, so be cautious.

Fertilizing

These cacti don't require a lot of fertilizing, but you can give them a boost during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced cactus fertilizer, such as Super Kabuto Cactus Fertilizer. Apply according to the instructions, being careful not to over-fertilize.

Pests and Diseases

The Peruvian Apple Cactus is relatively pest and disease-free, but you should still keep an eye out for common issues such as mealybugs, spider mites, and fungal infections. If you notice any problems, treat them promptly with an appropriate solution. Our Organic Pest Control Kit is will do the trick for treatment and prevention.

Pruning

These bad boys can grow quite large, even up to 20 feet in some cases. If you want to control the size or shape of your cactus, you can prune it back in the early spring before new growth begins. Use sharp, clean pruning shears and be careful not to remove too much at once.

So there you have it: a sunny spot, the right soil, and a bit of TLC are all your Peruvian Apple Cactus needs to thrive. Here's to adding a touch of desert charm to your garden. Happy growing!
